Diazepam is safe and effective when used as directed, but like all medicines it can cause side effects. Knowing what to expect — and when to seek help — keeps you safe.
Common side effects
Drowsiness, dizziness, tiredness and mild confusion are the most common, especially when starting treatment. Avoid driving, alcohol and operating machinery until you know how it affects you.
Less common but serious signs
Stop use and seek urgent medical help if you experience breathing difficulties, severe drowsiness, hallucinations, or signs of an allergic reaction such as swelling or rash.
Dependence and withdrawal
Diazepam can cause dependence if used long-term. Always follow your doctor’s plan for starting, continuing and stopping — never stop suddenly after prolonged use.
